Tsetse Flies fill the forests of northern Sub-Saharan Africa and feed on the blood of mammals like you and me! Aside from being quite literally a pain in the neck they can carry a dangerous disease called sleeping sickness which is often fatal in horses. This is the reason in fact that horses are not bred in Sub-Saharan Africa until its southernmost regions where the weather is too cold for these particular biting flies.
